About
Our History
For over three decades, SAHRC has pioneered evidence-based health education to improve health outcomes for children and communities. Our mission centers on advancing health equity and delivering culturally responsive programs that serve underserved populations most in need.
Our Founding Story
In 1991, Dr. Roberto P. Treviño founded the Social & Health Research Center with a clear mission: to address the alarming rise in childhood chronic diseases and the persistent health disparities affecting underserved communities.
Recognizing that traditional health education approaches were not meeting the needs of diverse populations, Dr. Treviño envisioned an organization that would combine rigorous scientific research with culturally responsive, community-centered programming. When children see their own experiences, languages, and cultures reflected in health education, they engage more deeply and build healthier habits that last a lifetime.
By 1995, SAHRC was formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, cementing our commitment to serving communities through evidence-based health education. This foundation has guided our work for over 30 years, as we continue to develop, evaluate, and disseminate programs that create lasting positive change in children's health behaviors and outcomes.
Timeline of Milestones
Three decades of innovation in health education and research
SAHRC Founded
Dr. Roberto P. Treviño establishes the Social & Health Research Center in response to rising childhood chronic diseases and health disparities
Nonprofit Status
SAHRC incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, formalizing our commitment to community health
Bienestar/NEEMA Development
Collaborative development with doctors, professors, teachers, and parents creates our flagship culturally responsive health education program
State Recognition
Texas Education Agency approves Bienestar/NEEMA as an official coordinated school health program
NIH-Funded Research
National Institutes of Health funding supports rigorous randomized controlled trials and longitudinal studies. Research demonstrated statistically significant reductions in BMI percentile, improved fasting glucose levels, increased physical activity, and enhanced nutrition knowledge among participating students. Results published in peer-reviewed journals established Bienestar/NEEMA as a nationally recognized evidence-based intervention.
Digital Innovation
Integration of interactive digital curriculum formats and technology-enhanced learning experiences
Curriculum Modernization
Comprehensive digital transformation with interactive eBook formats, expanded content library for Pre-K through 8th grade, enhanced accessibility features, and mobile-responsive design. Launch of updated teacher resources and student activity materials aligned with current health education standards.
Program Evolution
How our programs have grown and adapted over three decades
1990s: Culturally Responsive Foundation
Collaborated with doctors, teachers, parents, and community members to develop a bilingual curriculum that honored cultural traditions while delivering evidence-based health content. This participatory approach created materials that genuinely resonated with diverse student populations.
2000s: Research Validation
Conducted randomized controlled trials funded by the National Institutes of Health, publishing results in peer-reviewed journals. Studies documented measurable improvements: 3-5% reduction in BMI percentile among intervention students, improved fasting glucose levels, increased moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and significant gains in nutrition and health knowledge.
2010s: Adult Program Expansion
Launched CDC-accredited adult Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), extending evidence-based interventions to help adults lose weight, increase physical activity, and prevent type 2 diabetes. This family-centered approach reinforces healthy behaviors across generations.
2020s: Digital Transformation
Modernized curriculum delivery with digital eBooks, interactive activities, and mobile accessibility. Expanded content across all grade levels with updated resources aligned to current education standards, making evidence-based health education more accessible to schools nationwide.
